What Happened

In 2022, the governor of California signed Assembly Bill 1705, a bill introduced by Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin that made it all but impossible for the state's community colleges to offer remedial math and English courses. Since then, underprepared community college students, who were already disadvantaged by substandard high schools, have been failing their entry level coursework at much higher rates. They're then abandoning their educational programs, their local campuses, and their dreams for a successful future.

Who We Are

FixAB1705 is a grass roots network of California students, faculty, and educational leaders who have recognized the harm caused by Jacqui Irwin's legislation and are seeking solutions to its "unintended consequences." We seek a restoration of the pre-transfer level math and English courses that provided effective scaffolded learning for decades.
